The thermal expansion of a Au-Al-Yb intermediate-valence quasicrystal has been studied by X-ray diffraction measurements. We have found anomalous thermal expansion behavior, namely zero thermal expansion below 50 K. By comparison with an isostructural Au-Al-Tm quasicrystal, the contribution of the Yb valence variation was extracted, and it was shown that its negative thermal expansion component due to the valence shift toward the divalent state by cooling compensated for the positive thermal expansion of the original lattice.

Spin pumping refers to the spin current injection driven by magnetization dynamics from a ferromagnet into adjacent nonmagnetic conductors. Conventionally, ferromagnetic resonance is used to drive the magnetization dynamics and the spin pumping. Recently a new type of spin pumping driven by acoustic waves, i.e., the acoustic spin pumping, has been reported. We present a linear-response theory of the acoustic spin pumping.

We have investigated the magnetic properties of R$$_{2}$$Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{7}$$ (R=Yb and Lu), which belongs to the homologous family of electronic ferroelectric RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. Magnetization measurements show ferrimagnetic ordering at the Neel temperature (T$$_{N}$$) of about 270 K, which is slightly higher than that of RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ (T$$_{N}$$ about 230-250 K). Observation of spin glass and exchange bias shows a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagneticinteractions, similarly to RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$. This situation gives rise to a complex magnetic change and a broad peak of magnetic entropy change. Some characteristics, such as refrigeration temperatures higher than in RFe$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$, seem to offer a possibility of this system to applications.

High-T$$_{c}$$ superconductivity in the LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_{x}$$ system based on inelastic neutron scattering measurements

Dynamical spin susceptibility, $$chi$$"($$q$$,$$omega$$) of LaFeAsO$$_{1-x}$$F$$_{x}$$ system is discussed based on the itinerant picture. The spin resonant energy relative to the superconducting transition temperature is compared with those of other iron-based superconductors, and also with that of the gap mode in YNi$$_{2}$$B$$_{2}$$C. The resonant spin number roughly corresponds to the superfluid carrier number below superconducting gap energy 2$$Delta$$.

Vibrational spectroscopy studies of a pressure-induced disproportionation reaction of LaH$$_2$$

The pressure-induced disproportionation reaction of LaH$$_2$$ was investigated by infrared reflection and Raman measurements at ambient temperature. The relative reflection intensity began to decrease significantly at a pressure of about 12 GPa and fell to 10% of the initial value at 20 GPa. Absorption peaks at pressures above 14 GPa were assigned to the hydrogen vibrations at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the fcc metal lattice, respectively. These infrared results indicated insulating LaH$$_{2+delta}$$ precipitated from metallic LaH$$_2$$.

Site dependent hardening of the lanthanum metal lattice by hydrogen absorption

The compressibility of lanthanum (La) metal and its hydrides were measured at room temperature by high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction. La metal pressurized in a hydrogen medium forms a hydride with an fcc metal lattice, which likely contains hydrogen at a concentration close to 3.0. Equations of state have been determined by helium compression experiments for LaH$$_2$$ with tetrahedral interstitial sites fully occupied with hydrogen atoms and for LaH$$_{2.46}$$ with octahedral interstitial sites partially occupied with hydrogen atoms and tetrahedral sites fully occupied. Both hydrides possess fcc metal lattices. These values are three times larger than that of La metal and are very close to each other despite the difference in hydrogen occupation states. The hardening of the metal lattice by hydrogenation is attributed predominantly to hydrogen-metal interactions at the tetrahedral sites and is most pronounced for La, which has the largest ionic radius among rare-earth metals.

The crystal structure and charge density of (Ba$$_{0.5}$$Sr$$_{0.5}$$)(Co$$_{0.8}$$Fe$$_{0.2}$$)O$$_{2.33}$$ were investigated by the Rietveld refinement method and the maximum entropy method by using neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure was refined by using the split atom model to cation sites with the space group, ${it Pnma}$. The site occupancies of O1(4${it c}$) and O2(8${it d}$) sites were 0.59 and 0.87, respectively. It was found that the (Co, Fe)-O2 plane in the sample has anisotropic covalent and ionic bands, and that the (Ba, Sr)-O1 bond was ionic with a low charge density.

Equation of state of hexagonal boron nitride

Diffraction data from hexagonal boron nitride were measured through in situ synchrotron X-ray measurements under pressures and temperatures up to about 8GPa and 1000K, respectively. They were analyzed in the light of Birch Murnaghan's and Parsafar Mason's equations of state. The isothermal bulk moduli at ambient conditions obtained from these equations almost coincide. However, the value, about 20GPa, is appreciably smaller than the one reported previously. The X-ray diffraction patterns by which the current result is justified are presented. The possible origin of a large discrepancy in the values is discussed.

A GeS$$_{2}$$ glass was compressed up to 8 GPa at room temperature, heated up to 270 $$^{circ}$$C under 8 GPa and then decompressed to ambient pressure at room temperature, using a large volume high-pressure apparatus. The local structural-changes around Ge were examined by means of EXAFS method. The Ge-S bond length became monotonously short with increasing applied-pressure up to 8 GPa at room temperature. When the specimen was heated to 270 $$^{circ}$$C under 8 GPa, however, the vond length became slightly long. The elongated bond lengthe was almost kept even after the temperature was descended to room tempertature. In decompression process, the bond length became gradually long with releasing applied-pressure down to 2 GPa, following a change in compression process. Below 2 GPa, however, the Ge-S bond length was largely elongated, being lnger than the initial one. No significant change of coordination number was found in the compression and decompression processes up to 8 GPa. This change canbe explained by a combined effect of elastic and inelastic structural-changes.
